The Echo Trouser is part of a menswear shirt and pant collection designed in collaboration with Silvie Joseph. The trouser portion of the project was done solely by Sophie MacFarlane.

The Echo Trouser was inspired by 1940’s menswear, incorporating modern silhouettes and details. A prototype of the trouser was drafted and sewn by MacFarlane.

Target Market

A target market analysis was first completed to get a sense of who the consumer is. This involved researching demographics, geographics and phycographics as well as lifestyle, habits and muses.

Style Direction + Forecasting

The next phase was to get a strong sense of style direction for the designs, relating to the target market. This included creating a mood board, style direction board and forecasting analysis for the chosen upcoming season.

Style Cards

Technical flats of front, back and detail views were completed using Adobe Illustrator and organized with necessary information into style cards.

Optitex Pattern

Cad Optitex was used to create the Echo Trouser pattern. The pant block was made from a drafting book as a group drafting method comparison experiment. The drafting method used was concluded unsuccessfully as the biggest issue was the fit of the back curve.

Final Garment

A prototype of the trousers was made to get a sense of fit, traditional menswear techniques and design execution.
